On Saturday, February 6, Caulfield racecourse will be home to the $125 000 Group 3 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) as part of the elite programme scheduled for their opening Caulfield Festival of Racing meeting, the C F Orr Stakes Day.
This year the connections of 23 horses have paid up to nominate their runners for the 2010 Rubiton Stakes, which is being run on a date outside of January for the first time.
The new slot for the Rubtion Stakes on C F Orr Stakes Day has ensured a high number of top class horses will be competing.
Prolific trainer David Hayes is back, fresh from his win with Nicconi in last Saturday’s Lightning Stakes.
Hayes has nominated one of his best fillies, Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights, for the Rubiton, following a late decision to scratch her from the Lightning Stakes due to pressure from her owners Coolmore Stud.
Also nominated is the Tony Vasil-trained Lucky Secret, the experienced six-year-old coming off a last start victory in the Listed Kevin Heffernan Stakes back in November.
Last year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh has two nominations, Christmas Stakes winner Here De Angels and boom three-year-old We’re Gonna Rock, who impressed with a win on debut at Flemington in December.
Also nominated is the American trained Cannonball who is also a nominee in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes. He made his Australian debut as the first US trained thoroughbred to compete in the country last week when he placed ninth in the Lightning Stakes.
Other top nominees include the Lee Freedman-trained three-year-old Common Interest and Darren Weir’s sprinter Time Matters.
Acceptances from the nominations will be announced later in the week and the final field will be published here.
