Trainer Liam Birchley has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by four-year-old Missy Longstocking this time in and is confident she is more than capable of figuring as a serious contender in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on February 14th.
Securing eight wins and a further four minor places over her 16 start career so far, Missy Longstocking returned to racing in the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) on the Gold Coast on January 10th following a year in the paddock nursing several unfortunate ailments.
Jumping from the gates well in her first competitive hit-out, jockey Glen Colless settled the daughter of Sequalo mid-pack; receiving a good run in transit before sprinting well to finish a credible third; half a length off the pack of winner Straturbo.
Understandably pleased with the first-up result, Birchley told AAP Missy Longstocking is in a great headspace this season, and has chosen to target the 2015 Rubiton Stakes second-up, rather than accept a position in the final field for Saturday’s rescheduled Listed Nudgee Quality (1200m) in Brisbane.
“I didn’t want to run Missy Longstocking second-up on a possible wet track with 59kgs,” Birchley said.
“I have given her a little freshen-up and we will tackle the Rubiton at this stage.
“Depending on how she goes we will probably then push on into the Melbourne Autumn Carnival.”
Stamping her claims as one to watch from her maiden racing preparation over the 2012/13 summer, Missy Longstocking won each of the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1000m) and Group 3 McLachlan Stakes (1200m) before placing a credible third in the $2 million Gold Coast 2.y.o Guineas (1200m).
Returning for several impressive results over the 2013 winter, including victories in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) and Listed Hampden Stakes (1200m), the mare out of Linyanti won the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) in October 2013, and while unable to match the late pace when ninth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), responded well in placing third in each of the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) and Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m).
Nominations for the 2015 Rubiton Stakes are due to close on February 9th, while a final field and barrier draw will be finalised and released two days later.
