2016 Rubiton Stakes Next for Husson Eagle

February 4th, 2016

Husson Eagle has returned to racing in scintillating form this time, and trainer Patrick Payne is hopeful the gelding can take another step up in class for success in the 2016 Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on February 13th.

Posting four wins and a further five minors through only fifteen career starts so far, Husson Eagle has been a shining light in the Payne camp through recent seasons and returned this time for a credible fifth in the Ballarat Magic Millions 3&4.y.o Classic (1100m) on November 21st.

Progressing to third in the talent-rich ATC Farewells Allan Thomas BM85 (1000m) on Boxing Day, the talented son of Husson faced a monumental task in the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) on the Gold Coast last time out on January 9th but musted an impressive late sprint to hit the line a length in the clear of closest rival Wild Rain.

Payne told Racing Ahead the four-year-old has taken plenty of benefit from his most recent performance a short break, and is confident he will return in the 2016 Rubiton Stakes ready to go.

“I questioned three weeks prior whether or not he was good enough to win a Million dollar race but when the fields came out it looked an achievable goal for him,” Payne said.

“He went up there, Michelle (Payne) gave him a great ride and he’s a really nice horse who tries really hard, so he went and got the job done.

“Even if he doesn’t win another race he’s done a really nice job.               He goes up a fair bit in the ratings now but he deserves that.

“We’ll go onto the Rubiton Stakes now hopefully on Saturday week.

“He spent a week up in Queensland just jogging around up there on a farm at washpool and he’s in great order now so hopefully we’re heading to that race Saturday week.”

Husson Eagle debuted to racing during the 2014 Autumn Carnival for second behind Bring Me The Maid in the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m); progressing to fourth in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) before finishing second in a pair of Melbourne sprints.

Continuing to impress through spring, Husson Eagle broke through for a maiden race win in a Bendigo minor over 1100m first-up before placing third in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and producing a huge effort to finish 5th amongst particularly talented company in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
